About the event
Trataka, also known as fire kasina or candle gazing meditation, is a yogic meditation in which one focuses the eyes and attention on the flame of a candle. In classical yoga texts, Trataka is said to purify the mind, steady attention, and awaken intuitive insight. Modern research supports many of these traditional claims: studies have found that Trataka can improve concentration, visual attention, and sleep quality, while reducing stress, brain fog, and mental restlessness.
This Winter Solstice workshop invites participants to honor the return of the light through the meditative power of flame. The session will begin with a short talk on Trataka’s history and the modern science behind its benefits, followed by gentle movement and breathwork to prepare the body and mind. We’ll then move into a guided candle-gazing practice, exploring both outer concentration and inner illumination. The evening will close with quiet time for journaling or optional group reflection as an opportunity to integrate insights and set intentions for the season ahead.
All levels are welcome. No prior meditation experience is required, and in fact many who have a hard time meditating find this practice to be an accessible introduction to other forms of meditation.
